Hackathon Reflections: LINE Internal Hackathon 2020 (September 25, 2020)

Hello everyone, I'm LINE Tech Evangelist - Evan Lin. LINE values employees' autonomous innovation and teamwork, so LINE Internal Hackathons are held in various locations. This is the second internal hackathon competition in LINE Taiwan, and we also look forward to seeing the creativity generated by different teams.

The first internal event received a lot of positive feedback. Many non-engineering teams also wanted to participate, so this year we specifically modified the participation method. The theme of the second LINE internal hackathon competition is "Team up for A+", aiming to encourage colleagues to work together to optimize and innovate more amazing (WOW) product services.

First Review LINE Internal Hackathon 2019 - LINE Attitude

The theme of the first LINE Taiwan Internal Hackathon was "AI is new Attitude". As LINE is a company that values AI, we also hope that every employee can start from machine learning to reflect on each service, and whether some internal applications can be optimized through machine learning and artificial intelligence.

We received many interesting applications in the first LINE Internal Hackathon. We also shared the first-place results and technology at TECHPULSE 2019. That is, using artificial intelligence to assist the expense report system.

20019 LINE Internal Hackathon First Place: Automatic Expense Report System

LINE's development team is located in many countries, so LINE's engineering team has many opportunities to go to different countries' branches to cooperate and discuss. But the most troublesome thing for business travelers after returning is to manually enter many receipts into the system and forms step by step. This operation process often takes about half an hour, which consumes a lot of manpower.

Last year's participating team, through artificial intelligence learning, learned from the experience of more than hundreds of business trip forms. Through the good photo-taking of iPhone software, through OCR recognition and learning experience, automatically fill in different forms to the correct form position. And generate the form documents needed for expense reports. It greatly reduced the expense report process from the original thirty minutes to within two minutes. Therefore, it won the favor of the judges.

What’s new in 2020

After the first event, we received a lot of feedback:

  • Can non-engineering teams have the opportunity to participate? They have ideas but can't find engineers to team up with.
  • Is there more time for the participating teams to complete this project?

Based on the opinions from last year, the participation rules have been partially modified this year:

Each participating team needs to have members from different teams (e.g., developers + marketing team, or developers + human resources team). However, developers and testers are considered engineering teams and cannot form teams in this way.

Teams selected for the first stage proposal can have three Hacking Space (hackathon workshop) opportunities. Specific spaces and meals (afternoon tea) are provided on weekend afternoons to allow each participating team to maximize the completion of the product.

Colleagues make good use of the time and space provided by the company and participate enthusiastically without affecting the progress of the project.

Final

After three Hacking Space activities, it was also the day of the final. In order to allow colleagues in the company who did not participate to watch the final presentation together. This time, the final was specifically held in the company's twelfth-floor meeting space. The whole day's activities are divided into three parts:

  • Hacking:
    • Give colleagues the opportunity to make the final sprint and adjust the smoothness of the presentation.
  • Quiz activity:
    • The quiz activity held in the afternoon, in addition to some interesting questions. It also eased the tense atmosphere.
  • Final presentation:
    • The final presentation must include a product that can be demoed or played by the judges.

There are also some necessary arrangements on site, and a commemorative T-shirt is customized for each colleague. Provide to each participating colleague to take photos, so that this event will not be left blank.

Quiz Activities

The quiz activities that started from the first event last year are actually quite interesting. In addition to LINE Friends related stories quizzes, there are also some LINE related service questions. In addition to allowing each colleague to better understand LINE, it can also allow each colleague to raise their hands and exercise to relieve the tense atmosphere of the competition.

Event Summary

This year's participating topics are quite interesting (due to the possibility of becoming future products, it is not convenient to disclose). In addition to many products with the assistance of artificial intelligence and machine learning, there are also many products that are quite interesting whimsical ideas. Also, due to the arrangement of Hacking Space this year, the completion of each participating team's works is very high, not only can the judges try them on site, but also open them to all Taiwanese people for testing. The high degree of completion and stability made the judges praise them.
