Cataract Surgery: When Is the Best Time to Get It Done?

One of the most common questions patients ask is,
“Doctor, cataract hai… par surgery kab karani chahiye?”
Some are told to wait till it “matures,” while others fear doing surgery too early. This confusion is very common, especially among elderly patients and their families.
The truth is, there is no fixed age or fixed stage called the ‘perfect time’ for cataract surgery. Cataract surgery is not decided by how white the cataract looks, but by how much it is affecting your daily life and vision quality.
Earlier, people were advised to wait until the cataract became fully mature. But with today’s advanced technology, painless phacoemulsification and laser cataract surgery, waiting is no longer necessary and often not recommended. Modern cataract surgery is safest and easiest when done before the cataract becomes too hard.
The best time for cataract surgery is when you start noticing symptoms that interfere with your routine activities. These may include blurred or cloudy vision , difficulty reading, glare from lights, trouble with night driving, frequent change in glasses power,or reduced contrast and clarity. When vision starts affecting independence and comfort, that is usually the right time to consider surgery.
Delaying cataract surgery for too long can make the surgery more difficult. Very advanced cataracts can increase surgical complexity, recovery time, and the risk of complications. They can also lead to other eye problems like raised eye pressure or inflammation. This is why timely surgery is always better than waiting unnecessarily.
On the other hand, doing cataract surgery too early, when vision is still perfectly functional and daily life is not affected, may not be necessary. Cataract surgery is elective, not an emergency in most cases. The decision should always be individualised, based on vision needs, lifestyle, profession, and eye health.
Another important factor today is that cataract surgery is not just about removing cataract, it is also an opportunity to reduce dependence on glasses. With modern intraocular lenses (IOLs), many patients can improve both distance and near vision. This makes timing and planning even more important.
The most important message for patients is simple:
Don’t wait for cataract to “ripen,” and don’t rush unnecessarily either.
The right time is when cataract starts affecting your quality of life and vision.
A detailed eye examination and honest discussion with your eye surgeon will help decide the safest and most beneficial time for surgery. When done at the right stage, cataract surgery can restore clear vision, confidence, and independence.
