The Solana Foundation has officially launched on-chain governance through Solana Governance Proposals (SGPs).
Validators can now propose, support, and vote on core protocol decisions directly on-chain. All proposals are stake-weighted and verified using Merkle proofs.
Key Features of Solana Governance (SGP)
1. Permissionless Proposal Creation
Any validator with at least 100,000 SOL delegated can open a Solana Governance Proposal.
2. Clear Separation from SIMDs
- SGPs → Broader ecosystem signals and governance direction.
- SIMDs → Technical protocol changes (smaller scope).
All governance matters now flow through SGPs.
3. Staker Sovereignty (Delegator Override)
Delegators who disagree with how their validator voted (or if the validator didn’t vote) can now override the vote using their own stake weight at governance.solana.com.
This gives stakers real power and reduces reliance on validator behavior.
4. Anti-Spam Threshold
A proposal only moves to formal voting after reaching 15% of total network stake in support.
This keeps governance focused:
- Core developers continue shipping quickly.
- Validators only vote on proposals that actually matter to the ecosystem.
Why This Matters
- True on-chain decision making — No more off-chain signaling for major governance topics.
- Stake-weighted + verifiable — Merkle proofs ensure transparency and correctness.
- Delegator empowerment — Stakers can directly participate and override validators.
- Focused & efficient — The 15% threshold prevents low-quality or spam proposals while remaining reachable for serious initiatives.
This is a major step toward more decentralized and transparent governance on Solana.
Solana now has a clean, on-chain pathway for ecosystem-wide governance decisions while keeping technical protocol work focused and fast-moving.
What do you think the first major SGPs will be about?
