What i have done is build my own basic framework, which i use as basis for my projects, but it is really tiny, so only has needed things that i always use in my projects, then if i need some other things ill write it then and there, and add it to my collection of additions, so i can quickly grab it and add it if needed, this simplifies my projects, keeps the code tight, while still being reuseable in other projects, for example, if im building a site for a customer, then throwing in the blog unit, instead of rewriting, and then its added, but i still know my framework down to the core, since i build it from ground up. so, frameworks are useful, but available frameworks, tend to be extremely bloated, since they have to cater to so many whatif situations
