Mechanisms of kindness and compassion in evolutionary psychology

The article analyzes the complexity of human kindness, rejecting simplified visions of humans as either exclusively good or selfish beings. The author indicates that prosocial behaviors do not result from a single algorithm, but from a network of factors: kinship, reciprocity, social norms, and neurobiological processes. A key distinction is made between affective empathy and compassion, the latter of which includes the motivation to help. The text emphasizes that kindness is not automatic—it depends on regulatory capacities and the interpretation of the other person's intentions. Instead of biological determinism, a network model is proposed, in which moral reactions are the result of an assessment of relationships, resources, and social context, allowing for a better understanding of the limits of altruism and the mechanisms of forgiveness.
