Singapore: From Port to Institution of Global Coordination

The text analyzes the evolution of Singapore, defining it not only as a port but as a complex institution that reduces transaction costs in global trade. Utilizing the theories of Ronald Coase and Douglass North, the author demonstrates that the city-state's success results from the skillful lowering of informational, fiscal, and legal barriers between distant economic systems. The analysis is expanded with Mark Granovetter's sociological perspective, pointing to the phenomenon of embeddedness of transactions within ethnic and family relationship networks. Singapore thus appears as a weave of formal colonial institutions and the informal social capital of various diasporas, which created a unique ability to coordinate commodity and financial flows at the intersection of cultures and continents.
