A player-count page is a useful case study for building a small observability pipeline. The key is to store the value together with its context rather than treating a changing number as a permanent fact.
For each observation, record the source URL, collection time in UTC, the metric label, the platform covered, and whether the value is an estimate. Keep missing values distinct from zero.
When displaying a chart, label the time zone and sampling interval. A point-in-time concurrent count should not be compared directly with monthly active users or a historical peak. Add freshness indicators so readers can tell an old snapshot from a live measurement.
