Claude Opus Reverse-Engineered PC Accessories in Hours — Raising a New Security Concern

 AI is making it much easier to understand how hardware works, and a recent experiment shows just how quickly things can move.

An Amazon security engineer tested five PC accessories from Insta360, Shure, ASUS, and Elgato using Claude Opus 5. The entire process took around 13 hours and involved 98 prompts.

Claude helped examine device firmware, uncover hidden features, and identify weak security protections. Some of the findings were particularly concerning.

For example, a modified webcam could be made to hide its recording light. A microphone could also appear muted while continuing to capture audio.

There is a positive side to this technology. AI-assisted reverse engineering could help developers improve hardware support, add new features, and make devices work better across different software platforms.

But there is also a security risk. The same AI tools could help attackers discover firmware weaknesses much faster and make hardware attacks easier to carry out.

The bigger concern is not that AI is creating new security flaws. Instead, it can make existing weaknesses much quicker and easier to discover.

This is why hardware makers may need stronger firmware checks, signed software updates, and better security protections to keep their devices safe.

AI is changing the way we understand hardware, and this experiment shows both the useful side and the risky side of that change.
