What if an AI assistant could work directly on your computer instead of relying entirely on cloud servers?
Meta has introduced Muse Glimmer, a new 30-billion-parameter open-weight AI model designed to run capable personal AI agents on consumer computers.
Unlike a basic chatbot that mainly responds to questions, Glimmer is built for agents capable of handling multi-step tasks. These agents can potentially work with files, inspect screenshots, use tools, write code, and make changes based on instructions.
One of the most interesting parts is its local approach. Meta says Glimmer can run on a Mac or PC with a single consumer GPU, potentially allowing more personal information to remain on the user's device.
The model is also available under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing developers to download, modify, and build on it.
The release connects with Meta's broader vision of making advanced personal AI more widely available. However, Meta's more powerful Muse Spark model remains closed, highlighting the difference between the AI systems available to developers and the company's most advanced technology.
