Starlink Chimney Mount Aerodynamics: 90mph Gale Wind Load Math & Structural Anchoring

By Gary Pearce — Lead Physical Infrastructure Engineer at ADI Communications (Direct: 07860 244 274)

Installing a SpaceX Starlink Gen 3 or Standard Actuated satellite panel across the exposed hills of the Pennines, Yorkshire Dales, or Scottish Highlands presents a severe mechanical engineering challenge. The flat rectangular surface acts as an aerodynamic sail. Under severe gale conditions (80–90 mph), aerodynamic drag generates substantial shear stress and overturning moments against masonry chimneys.

In this engineering breakdown, we present the structural drag calculations, overturning moments, and open-source tool we built: the Starlink Wind Load & Overturning Moment Calculator.

1. The Aerodynamic Drag & Force Equations

The total aerodynamic force exerted on a flat rectangular antenna perpendicular to incident wind flow is governed by standard fluid dynamics:

$$F_{\text{drag}} = \frac{1}{2} \times \rho \times v^2 \times A \times C_d$$

Where:

  • $\rho$ (Air Density at sea level, 15°C) = $1.225 \text{ kg/m}^3$
  • $v$ (Wind Velocity) = converted from mph to m/s ($1\text{ mph} \approx 0.44704\text{ m/s}$)
  • $A$ (Surface Area of Starlink Dishy Gen 3) = $0.231 \text{ m}^2$ ($594\text{ mm} \times 383\text{ mm}$)
  • $C_d$ (Aerodynamic Drag Coefficient for a flat planar plate) = $1.17$

Overturning Moment Calculation:

The overturning moment ($M$) acting at the chimney bracket fulcrum is calculated based on the mast lever arm ($h$):

$$M = F_{\text{drag}} \times h$$

For a 1.5-metre mast height:

Wind Speed Velocity (m/s) Dynamic Pressure ($q$) Drag Force ($F_{\text{drag}}$) Overturning Moment (1.5m Mast)
40 mph (Gale) 17.88 m/s 195.9 Pa 53.0 N (5.4 kgf) 79.5 Nm
60 mph (Storm) 26.82 m/s 440.7 Pa 119.1 N (12.1 kgf) 178.7 Nm
80 mph (Severe Gale) 35.76 m/s 783.5 Pa 211.8 N (21.6 kgf) 317.7 Nm
90 mph (Pennine Hurricane) 40.23 m/s 991.6 Pa 268.0 N (27.3 kgf) 402.0 Nm

2. Why Masonry Chimney Drilling Violates Building Standards

Drilling expanding steel sleeve anchor bolts into weathered 19th-century lime mortar or soft brick chimney stacks creates micro-fissures. Under cyclic wind buffeting (vibration resonance at 12–18 Hz), anchor bolts pulverize the mortar matrix, resulting in catastrophic bracket tear-out.

Trade Standards for Zero-Penetration Chimney Lashing:

  1. Galvanized Steel Wire Lashing Kit: 7-strand 1.5mm high-tensile galvanized or stainless steel wire wrapped 360° around the chimney stack.
  2. Heavy-Duty Corner Mitres: 4 corner plates distribute compressive tension evenly without chipping clay bricks or sandstone arrises.
  3. Double-Lashed Steel Brackets: For masts $\ge 1.5\text{ m}$, use twin cradle lashings spaced at least 300mm apart to counteract torsional moments.
  4. Solid Copper WF100 / Cat6 with Low Friction Grommets: Black UV-rated Cat6 solid copper cabling routed with a clean downward drip loop to prevent water ingress into attic spaces.

3. Open-Source Calculator & Suite Architecture

We have open-sourced our complete structural calculator suite on GitHub and GitLab:

4. Field Installation Checklist

  • [x] Verify line-of-sight with Starlink App 100° obstruction cone.
  • [x] Select high-grade 1.5" or 2" heavy-gauge aluminium alloy mast (16 SWG minimum).
  • [x] Apply zinc paste to galvanized tensioning J-bolts to eliminate electrolytic corrosion.
  • [x] Terminate Cat6 with shielded RJ45 pass-through connectors and grounded Ethernet surge suppressor.
