Twelve Organizational Purposes: 4 Scales and 3 Aims

Individuals have missions; organizations have purposes. All organizational purpose fits a 4×3 matrix: four scales × three aims. Twelve cells containing every reason an organization exists.

Four scales. Individual: one person's work. Team: a few people burning for a goal. Company: organizing strangers through contracts and markets. Civilization: a relay across generations. Each scale has its own physics — individuals run on will, teams on trust, companies on incentives, civilizations on transmission.

Three aims. Survival: stay alive first. Growth: expand capability, capture niches. Transmission: pass the flame to the next generation — the highest aim, because it defines what remains after the organization dies.

Diagnosis. A company staring only at survival shrinks in fear; growth without transmission dissolves when the founder leaves. Healthy organizations cycle the three aims like breathing — inhale (survive), expand (grow), exhale (transmit).

For you: which cell are you in? The Transmission column is emptiest — what's most worth doing is usually what fewest do.
