I think it's definitely going in that direction and I like that you included the monetization side. Hey, maybe Github will become Spotify for Open source!

Having been a freelancer for so long myself I can definitely understand the freedom portion but I can also tell you there's a gap in the industry, I have over 10K hours in Upwork and it's worked for me, but I can't tell you how much it's bad mouthed in the community, specially by senior devs who don't feel like competing in what can seem an unfair marketplace.
There are options like Gun.io or similar but then the projects stream isn't as steady, apparently TopTal is the Holy Grail but it's been said that once there you still need to fight for projects.

And then, there's the one developer that wants to climb the corporate ladder and that can be tricky not being physically there, social engineering is hard as is, try remote.

I love these posts, it's a great research but it serves us well to remember that there isn't a silver bullet and that even working comfortably from home is not for everyone, as weird as that sounds. Awesome insights!
