I did not build TokenBar because I wanted another macOS menu bar app.
I built it because AI costs get weird fast when you cannot see what is happening.
You start small. A few prompts. A few tools. A few more retries because the answer was almost right.
Then the bill shows up and you are trying to reconstruct where the money went.
That is the real pain.
Most people do not need another dashboard full of charts. They need one simple thing:
- live visibility into token usage
- a quick way to spot runaway prompts
- a way to notice when the “cheap” workflow is actually expensive
That is what TokenBar does for me. It keeps cost visible while I work, right in the menu bar.
If you are using LLMs every day and the spend feels fuzzy, that fuzziness is the problem.
