Death by a thousand credits
Open the pricing page of almost any AI-for-WordPress tool and you'll find the same shape: a monthly fee, a credit allowance, and overage charges when you actually use it. The more useful the tool becomes to you, the more it costs — and the meter never stops. You're not buying software; you're renting access to your own workflow.
For a hobby blog that's an annoyance. For a business that runs content, SEO and a store through AI every day, it's a structural tax that grows exactly as fast as your success.
Where the money actually goes
Here's the part the pricing page doesn't emphasize: most of these tools are a thin layer over a model API (OpenAI, Anthropic, and friends). You pay the tool's subscription, and the tool pays the model provider a fraction of it. You're covering the model's cost plus the middleman's margin plus their infrastructure plus their growth targets.
There's a simpler arrangement: pay once for the software, and pay the model provider directly for the tokens you use. No middle layer marking up your own usage.
What "pay once, bring your own key" looks like
This is the model GOMAX ULTIMATE is built on:
- Pay once for the plugin. It's yours. Updates included.
- Bring your own key — connect your own OpenAI/Anthropic/Groq key, or point it at a local model. The AI usage is billed by your provider at cost, or free if you self-host a model.
- Self-hosted — everything runs on your server. No per-action metering, because there's no meter to run. The economics invert. Instead of "the more I use it, the more the vendor charges me," it becomes "the more I use it, the more value I get from a fixed cost." Heavy users win the most — the opposite of the subscription model.
The objection: "but subscriptions fund ongoing development"
Fair — and worth answering honestly. Pay-once software funds development through new sales and paid upgrades, the way desktop software did for decades and the way a huge part of the WordPress ecosystem still does. It's a different engine, not a broken one. What it removes is the incentive to meter and gate your everyday usage to protect recurring revenue.
When a subscription still makes sense
If you want someone else to hold the model relationship, absorb the reliability risk, and hand you a single bill, a managed subscription is a legitimate choice. The point isn't that subscriptions are evil — it's that for anyone comfortable holding their own API key, paying a middleman a recurring markup on their own usage is a cost with no matching benefit.
The one-line version
Rent the tool and you rent your own workflow back from a middleman. Own the tool, bring your own key, and your only AI bill is the one you'd pay anyway — at cost.
