DEV Community

I’m building something to solve a real problem developers face daily — what bugs you the most as a dev?

Hi all! 👋

I’m a developer who’s been through the usual grind — debugging vague errors, jumping between tools, and managing environments that magically break in production. 😅

I’m currently exploring ideas for a tool or product that solves a real pain point for developers. The catch? I don’t want to build just another to-do list or weather app. I want to work on something that truly helps developers save time, reduce stress, or boost productivity.

Instead of guessing in isolation, I thought — why not ask the dev community directly?

👉 What I’d love to know:

What’s one annoying problem or workflow issue you deal with regularly as a developer?
If someone made a tool that solved it for you, what would it look like?
Is there a tool you use but wish it was way better?
Are there non-dev-tool ideas (mental health, freelance, job hunting, open source, learning, etc.) you wish existed?
To give you an idea, some of the problem spaces I’ve thought about:

Dependency hell / environment mismatch
Poor API/backend documentation or testing UX
Burnout / solo dev loneliness
Invoice/tax pain for freelancers
Legacy code understanding / test generation
Lack of focus or accountability when coding alone
I want to either:

Build something useful as a side project, or
Validate a problem worth solving for a future startup idea.
If you’ve ever thought: “Ugh, I wish there was a better way to do this,” I’d love to hear about it. Even small frustrations count.

Thanks in advance! 🙏

I’ll reply to every comment.
