Somaliland at 34: A Model of African Resilience and Self-Reliance

Mohamed Farah Tahar | May 25, 2025*

“In a region plagued by instability, Somaliland’s unrecognized nationhood stands as a testament to the power of African-led governance, community resilience, and democratic ambition.”

Thirty-four years since its declaration of independence from Somalia in 1991, Somaliland has carved out a unique identity rooted in peace, democratic governance, and a vision of African self-reliance.

Despite lacking international recognition, this self-declared republic continues to build its institutions and maintain stability in one of the world’s most fragile regions.

Indigenous Democracy in Action

Unlike many regions where external actors drive political transitions, Somaliland’s democratic project is indigenous. Its success derives not from international intervention, but from:

  • Traditional elders,
  • Grassroots reconciliation,
  • A population committed to a peaceful political process.

Over the years, Somaliland has:

  • Conducted multiple elections,
  • Peacefully transferred power,
  • Maintained a functioning government.

A Message to Africa and the World

Somaliland’s model reminds Africa and the global community that legitimacy stems from the people, not just foreign recognition.

Its achievements in:

  • Security,
  • Governance,
  • Civil society engagement

...challenge the narrative that African states must rely on external aid and validation.

Time for Global Recognition

As it celebrates 34 years, Somaliland deserves more than symbolic praise.

It is time for the international community to:

  • Re-evaluate its position,
  • Recognize the achievements of a people who have proven their capability to govern themselves with dignity and purpose.
