What is LGM-SOC?
Let's Grow More – Summer Of Code is a 2-month long open-source program designed to foster student participation in open source software development under mentors from the open-source community. With 50+ projects, 100+ mentors, and 3000+ participants, the first edition of this program kick-started on 10 June 2021 and lasted two months until 10 Aug 2021. The Process:
- The process starts with choosing an appropriate role that suits.

- Mentor - Experts on the open-source, who are available throughout the summer to review pull requests, help with concepts and generally support the team.
- Project Admin - People with solid open-source skills who wish to invest time in building up the most innovative software.
- After choosing the role, one has to fill in a form that requests their basic details, including contact number, tech skills, the position they wish to apply for, etc., followed by few questions that test the motive and enthusiasm behind their application. The concerned candidate will receive a mail within five to seven working days regarding the status of their application.
My journey as a mentor at LGM-SOC '21:
I received my response mail on 3 June 2021, which marked the beginning of my journey at LGM-SOC '21. I was to mentor under the project - Hacking Script, which aimed to provide utility scripts that could make everyday life easy. With around a week to spare for the program to start, I made sure that I have enough exposure to the project through interaction with my project admin and fellow mentors.
Initially, the program started with fewer pull requests, but the numbers reached an extraordinary figure as days passed. Many participants turned up for the project I was mentoring, and the idea and innovation behind every participant's script were beyond expectations.
Finally, 10 Aug 2021 registered my conclusion as a mentor at LGM-SOC '21 with over 200+ conversations and 170+ merges.
Overall, it was an astonishing two months with enormous learning and interaction with participants, mentors and project admin. One of the beautiful aspects of this program is that everyone, including mentors and project admins, was inclined towards learning something new. I learned a bunch from the participants who were restless and committed throughout the program.
Before drawing the curtains, I would like to show my gratitude to the project admin - Tejas Sudhir Tapas and fellow mentors - Aman Prakash Jha, Raveena Bhasin and Meha Bhalodiya and the entire team for making it a memorable one!
Thanks for reading!
