10 Years of Working for Others Is Not as Profitable as 2 Years of Running My Own One-Person Company

🌟 After 10 years of grinding, I've built a one-person company that earns four times my previous salary... The truth is harsh.

It’s 2 AM. I just finished tallying the numbers. My fingers hovered over the keyboard for what felt like an eternity—my profit is actually four times what I used to earn at a job. Honestly, I’m still a bit shocked.

Just two years ago, I was stuck in the daily grind. I did everything from advertising copywriting to e-commerce planning and SaaS product management. Ten years, countless industries. Weekends? Non-existent. While others were out dating, I was taking on side gigs. While they were traveling, I was writing proposals. I always felt I didn’t deserve a better life. Until the day I added it all up—after a decade of working for others, I realized my savings were less than the profits from my one-person business in just two years. That moment was a wake-up call.

You might not believe the way my income is structured. Rent, enterprise services, knowledge-sharing platforms, training camps, stocks, sponsorships, royalties, business investments… eight different income streams. I used to think having a lot of income was impressive. Now I know that being resilient is what truly matters. If your income relies on just one or two sources and they’re unbalanced, can you really handle the risks when they come? I’ve seen too many people fall apart when a single project fails.

So, how do you actually build a one-person company? I’ve reflected on four stages filled with hard-earned lessons.

âś…Stage 1: Start and Validate (Annual income < 300k)

Don’t jump straight into selling low-cost courses. Seriously, you’ll wear yourself out. Start with high-ticket items: consulting, coaching, full projects. For ten years, I sacrificed my weekends taking on various industry projects to push my own limits. One-on-one services yield the quickest results. You invest, and the other party invests too, and that’s how you build your case studies.

âś…Stage 2: Standardize and Grow (Annual income 300k-1 million)

The previous stage focused on exploring needs and delivering exceptional service. Now, it’s time to package your knowledge into standardized products: courses, training camps, SOP documents, knowledge bases… Choosing the right platform is crucial. Whether it’s Xiaohongshu, WeChat, Douyin, video accounts, or podcasts, pick what aligns with your strengths. For me, it’s a combo of “WeChat Official Account × Podcast × Private Domain.”

❓AI Workflows?

Honestly, this thing is like a nuclear weapon now. But I see many people using it wrong. They treat AI as just a tool, while I see it as a partner. From content creation to user analysis and even financial calculations… AI handles it all. The time I save? I use it to strategize, spend time with family, or even just daydream. Technology isn’t the end goal; freeing up talent is.

Back in 1880, when electricity first became common, most people only saw it as “brighter lights.” Only a few recognized it as a revolution in production lines, urban transformation, and lifestyle changes. Today’s AI is the same. Most are still caught up in debates about which model is better. Yet a handful have already redefined their entire business models with AI. Don’t let fear take away your power to think.

Starting today, diversify your income streams to three or more. Free your time from repetitive tasks. Use AI, but don’t rely on it. Keep thinking, keep creating.

Empower yourself with AI, but don’t be trapped by it; use multiple income sources to combat uncertainty. Reclaim your time for life, turning your expertise into value. The future is here—go forth with ease, achieve your goals, and live life the way you envision! 🌟
