Where Companies Spend: Anthropic Just Surpassed OpenAI in Enterprise API Share

Anthropic has made significant strides in capturing a major share of API spending among U.S. enterprises.

This chart from Ramp, a corporate expense management platform, tracks the API spending of over 50,000 U.S. companies on OpenAI and Anthropic from July 2025 to February 2026.

Back in July 2025, OpenAI dominated with over 90% of enterprise API spending, while Anthropic accounted for less than 10%.

But then the tide began to turn.

From July to October 2025, OpenAI's share slowly dipped from over 90% to around 60%. Claude started to nibble away at that share, though the pace was still gradual.

The real turning point came between November and December 2025. Claude’s share began to rise rapidly, while OpenAI fell below 50%.

By January and February 2026, the tables had completely turned: Anthropic’s API spending share surpassed that of OpenAI.

Looking at the product breakdown is even more intriguing:

On the Anthropic side, Claude 4.5 Opus is the clear leader, taking up the largest slice of the pie. Claude 4.5 Sonnet and Claude 4 Sonnet each contribute a bit as well, creating a tiered offering across high, medium, and low.

Over at OpenAI, GPT-4.1, GPT-4o, and GPT-5 Mini each take up smaller portions, along with a miscellaneous "Other OpenAI" category. The product line appears more scattered and lacks a dominant offering like Opus.

These insights reveal several key points:

  1. Enterprises choose AI based on effectiveness, not just hype. While consumers might continue using ChatGPT due to brand familiarity, businesses need to justify every dollar spent with ROI in mind. Anthropic’s growth indicates that Claude is delivering real value in practical business scenarios.

  2. Claude 4.5 Opus is a game-changing product. Its significant share of spending shows that it has established a clear advantage in enterprise-level tasks.

  3. OpenAI’s product line is too fragmented. With GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, and GPT-5 Mini all competing at once, businesses are uncertain about where to invest, allowing Claude’s clear product hierarchy to capture budgets.

While ChatGPT boasts 900 million weekly active users in the consumer market, the enterprise space is already shifting financial support toward Anthropic.

This is the critical battleground in the AI competition.
