As for log analyzing competition, Lnav is really good. It has filters, context aware navigation, can mesh multiple log files chronologically, it has zoomable histograms and it can even evaluate sql clauses against your log. It's also a single binary to install with no dependencies and you can have it on your server since it works via ncurses. Open source, too.
