Once those toggles are off, the icon stays gone and Alt+G stops working. Note that this Gemini toggle is separate from Chrome’s other AI features — things like ‘Help me write’ in text fields, tab organization, and theme creation each have their own on/off switches under the AI features section of Settings, so turning off Gemini alone won’t disable them.
Tips / Common Mistakes
Don’t stop at unpinning if your goal is privacy, not just a cleaner toolbar — the assistant and its page-access permissions stay active until you turn them off in Settings.
Don’t assume the Gemini toggle disables every Chrome AI feature. ‘Help me write’ has its own separate setting (chrome://settings/ai/helpMeWrite) that you need to turn off individually if you also want that gone.
The separate ‘AI Mode’ button that sometimes appears in the address bar is a different feature from the Gemini side panel icon. To remove that one, go to chrome://flags, search for ‘AI Mode in the omnibox,’ and switch it from Default to Disabled, then relaunch Chrome. Flags are experimental, so this option can move or disappear in future Chrome updates.
