After seeing Irvine Welsh DJ last night, I thought to myself that we ought to understand our abilities further. I mean, this is a guy who is best known for his books, yet it stands to reason his disk jockey skills are not to be trifled with.
When I got home, I realised I often get tunnel vision, and I don’t explain my ideas as well as I can actually envision them. It’s a bit like asking an AI image generator to make you a picture: what ends up on screen is rarely what you saw in your head. I also realised that because I execute and understand things about equally fast, I have little time left for the things I actually want to do. Those are the ideas and architectures I want to verify, the things that could work but I never get the chance to validate.
That’s why I want to start using this blog to post my architectural thinking, designs and theories. Sure, you could ask an AI, but there’s a gap between something being validated and something being understood the way you envisioned it, and nowadays that gap is too large. A model can stress-test a design, but only the version you managed to describe, not the one in your head. Writing it down properly is the first step either way, and putting it in public means real people can poke holes in it too.
So, here is what I am planning to do, and will update in the next post if anything changes:
POST FORMAT:
Problem: What is difficult or missing in existing systems? What functionality does this provide by glueing two together? What does this enable that isn’t possible now?
Design/Pattern: Proposed arrangement of components or functionality needed.
Difference: What already exists? How does it compare to existing approaches?
Assumptions: What needs to be true for it to work?
Failure modes: What could go wrong? What currently prevents this?
Status: untested, partly validated, or proven, with notes as that changes.
First proper write-up coming soon (enough :D). If you think I’m wrong, have any suggestions or validate any of these patterns that is what the comments are for.
That's all for now folks!
