Artificial intelligence programs create applications within hours

AI models can now generate functional software applications from scratch in hours, leading to projects like the open-source PhotoCraft.

However, researchers point out that rapidly generated applications often lack proper security controls and contain significant code volume challenges.

Brandon Thomas, head of the company ArtCraft, created the first version of PhotoCraft by giving simple instructions to an artificial intelligence program for about 24 hours. PhotoCraft is an open-source program that competes with Adobe Photoshop, with a nearly identical look and feel.

PCMag photography expert Jim Fisher tested PhotoCraft and LightCraft and found them to be remarkably close to Adobe's programs, though they lack some advanced features. Meanwhile, WordCraft, ArtCraft's equivalent of Microsoft Word, is about 60 percent ready for real work, according to its creators.

The difference in philosophy and code

Ivan Kutskir, creator of Photopea, stated that not a single line of his program was written by artificial intelligence and that its development began in 2012.

For his part, Italo Vignoli of The Document Foundation pointed out that LibreOffice contains over seven million lines of code, while applications built quickly with artificial intelligence typically have only thousands. For example, the current build of WordCraft reaches 88.000 lines of code and includes documented bugs.

Security and legal issues

Researchers have identified thousands of applications created with artificial intelligence that have little or no protection and user identification.

On a legal level, attorney Thomas Dunlap said that decoding and studying software is generally legal in the United States and is treated as fair use.

Meanwhile, Anthropic has temporarily suspended access to its Fable 5 model due to government export controls related to cybersecurity concerns.
