Bose announced the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen) at $299, featuring Bluetooth 5.4 with multipoint support, aptX Adaptive codecs via Snapdragon Sound, IPX4 water resistance, and up to 28.5 combined battery hours with a redesigned wireless-charging case.

Design and appearance

The headphones fit over the ear with a flexible arm, without blocking the ear canal. Changes include a new connector called the Light Flex Grip and a metal cap on the outside of each earbud. They are available in black, white, chocolate, olive green and pink.

Durability and handling

They are certified to be sweat and light rain resistant, but not dustproof. Each earbud has a physical button for play, pause, track change, volume adjustment, and a user-configurable shortcut.

Connectivity and audio

The headphones support connection to two devices simultaneously. The battery lasts up to 9 hours on a single charge, while the case offers an additional 19,5 hours. Enabling certain audio features reduces battery life to around 5 or 4 hours. The redesigned case supports both wireless and wired charging, with a quick 10-minute charge providing around 2 hours of playback.

Application and future features

The companion app allows for control of listening functions and connected devices. The company said future software updates will add additional features, such as device discovery, assistant support, and shortcuts for music services. The built-in microphones perform well for calls, although the audio sounds quite processed.
