Budgie 10.10.4, the fourth maintenance update in the desktop environment’s 10.10 series, reworks panel auto-hide behavior and adds shortcuts for panel control and multi-monitor window movement.
The release also reports application scanning reduced from roughly 200 ms to 22 ms, with temporary memory allocations down 59%—useful details for developers tracking desktop responsiveness and resource use.
Better control over taskbars
The new version changes the way taskbars automatically disappear. In automatic mode, the bar hides as soon as any window on the same screen fills all the space, while in smart mode it hides only when the active window fills the screen.
When a bar is hidden, it leaves a small three-pixel strip at the edges of the screen so you can show it again with the mouse, without it taking up any screen space.
New shortcuts and window control
The update adds new keyboard shortcuts. With the Super+T combination, you can show or hide all taskbars. The sidebar also gets shortcuts for switching between its views, while pressing the same shortcut closes the sidebar.

On computers with multiple monitors, the arrow key combination restores the ability to move windows from one monitor to another. Additionally, picture-in-picture windows, including those from Firefox, remain permanently on top of other windows.
Less resource consumption and faster loading
Budgie's creators reduced CPU usage from the taskbar by about 36% in the first few minutes of operation. The time it takes to search for applications has been significantly reduced, while temporary memory allocations have also been reduced.
Lighting settings and corrections
The new version allows you to adjust the screen dimming time from 30 seconds to 30 minutes, with the option to turn it off completely. Users can also choose their preferred screen lock schedule.
The update fixes an issue that could cause taskbar items to disappear when not in English. It also resolves issues with launch, menu placement, and closing, mouse cursor visibility in virtual machines, and compatibility with older applications.
