Ricursive Intelligence is developing AI to automate chip design, aiming to reduce the process from months or years to about a week.
This introduction examines its whole-chip optimization approach, the founders’ earlier work on AlphaChip, and their claim that AI-designed chips could be more energy-efficient.
The timeline is a company goal, not a reported result.
Speed and expertise in design
Today, designing a new chip takes anywhere from months to years, limiting companies’ options for what they can build. Recursive Intelligence says that through artificial intelligence, that time could be cut to about a week. Such a development would enable the creation of specialized chips for areas where development has been difficult or unprofitable until now, such as space, virtual reality and biology.
New methods and efficiency
The AI approach differs from traditional methods. Instead of dividing the chip into individual parts for separate processing, the system tries to optimize the entire component. The AI uses unusual patterns and shapes that outperform traditional methods. An earlier system developed by the creators, AlphaChip, had proven the value of this approach by successfully designing circular component layouts.
The company estimates that chips designed this way will be more energy efficient, reducing the need for huge computing centers and making existing systems more efficient.
