Databricks co-founder Arsalan Tavakoli-Shiraji discussed enterprise AI adoption, legacy system modernization using AI agents, and cloud partnerships at TechCrunch Disrupt.
Databricks is now a data storage and artificial intelligence giant, valued at $190 billion and with customers from over 70% of the Fortune 500 companies. Tavakoli-Shirazi spoke about these difficulties at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference, explaining how a new company can gain the trust of large customers.
Collaboration with larger companies
In its early years, Databricks unsuccessfully tried to secure a deal with Swiss bank UBS. The solution came when it partnered with Microsoft and became an Azure service partner.
This move helped the startup gain customer trust. Today, Databricks itself operates as a larger umbrella, selling the products of smaller companies, such as Hightouch, Addepar, and Tecton, under its own terms and security settings.
What worries big businesses?
When companies try to sell AI tools to large customers, they must address four key concerns, which Tavakoli-Shirazi calls the “four Cs”:
- The context, i.e. the ability of artificial intelligence to understand the needs and data of the business.
- Choice, that is, the freedom to switch between different models instead of being dependent on a single provider.
- Cost, i.e. control of operating expenses.
- Control, i.e. security controls and data protection.
The opportunity in old systems
According to him, 99% of the businesses he speaks to are still in the very early stages of AI. These companies still rely on expensive and legacy systems, such as old computers and decades-old programs, which are difficult to understand and update.
