The pLinux5-NG project demonstrates a custom bootloader implementation for the PlayStation 5, enabling Linux execution.
By leveraging the Relapse jailbreak and Byepervisor-Reborn, the project seeks to run Steam-based games on the console hardware.
The implementation is currently tethered to firmware version 13.20, as Sony has patched the exploited vectors in version 14.x.
This project highlights the complexities of porting Linux to proprietary, highly locked-down gaming architectures.
Which consoles are affected?
This feature is exclusive to PlayStation 5 running software version 13.20. Sony's newer 14.x versions have already closed the loopholes that allow such interventions. This means that those who have upgraded their console to more recent software cannot use pLinux5-NG.
The consequences of the conversion
This option comes with significant limitations:
- Loss of official services: Access to PlayStation Network requires the latest software version. If you modify your console, you will not be able to connect to Sony services.
- Practical use: The project is primarily aimed at running games via Steam on the console. However, using the PlayStation 5 as a computer is not practical. The performance and ease of use offered by a regular PC remain superior, making this effort more of a technical experiment than a realistic alternative for everyday use.
