KeePassXC 2.8 released with five security fixes

KeePassXC 2.8 is the first stable release in the new series and fixes five security issues affecting versions 2.7.x and earlier.

The fixes cover legacy KDB import, browser integration, and Windows SSH key sharing with Pageant.

The release also moves the project from Qt 5 to Qt 6; the developers rate the issues low to medium severity.

Five security fixes

The issues affected versions 2.7.x and earlier. The KeePassXC creators rated them as low to moderate severity and said they did not threaten encryption or core password management functionality. However, they recommend that users upgrade.

The fixes address the import of old password bases, two browser login issues, and a Windows issue when sharing SSH keys with Pageant. The developers clarified that the issues were not caused by AI-written code. However, AI-assisted analysis helped identify them.

New features and fixes

On Linux, the release adds support for auto-typing saved credentials on Wayland-powered computers, as well as fast unlocking. It also offers remote password synchronization, input via other programs, and the ability to change keyboard shortcuts.

Administrators of Windows computers can now enforce certain settings for the app. The release also adds more statistics for passwordless logins and temporary verification codes, as well as better import of Proton Pass credentials.

KeePassXC 2.8 fixes issues that caused freezes on computers with one or two processor cores, as well as errors in password generation and connection to browsers. It also fixes an issue with emptying the clipboard on some Linux systems and problems on computers with Windows and ARM processors.

The release is available from the KeePassXC website. Linux users can also find it on Flathub and the official Ubuntu app repository.
