Linux Mint 27, codenamed Adrien, is expected at Christmas 2026 and will use Ubuntu 26.04 LTS as its base.
The release also starts a new series of codenames, returning to A and switching from women’s names to men’s.
Linux Mint has not officially explained the naming change.
Linux Mint is also changing the way it numbers future releases: the numbers will be based on the year of release. Version 27 will be followed by 28.
Version 27 also begins a new series of codenames, which returns to the letter A. From version 1.0 Ada in 2006 to version 22.3 Zena in 2026, Linux Mint used female names in alphabetical order. Now it's switching to male names.
Members of the Linux community have criticized this tradition, calling it sexist or objectifying. Linux Mint has not officially explained the change. The author of this article believes that it may be related to these criticisms.
Clement Lefebvre said that, in the more than 20 years he has been working on Linux Mint, he cannot remember another release with so many changes and new features.
