Microsoft adds security protection for Linux computers in businesses

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint now officially supports Linux desktop environments in public preview.

Designed for enterprise workstations running distributions like Ubuntu, RHEL, and Fedora, the platform brings real-time antivirus, EDR, and centralized monitoring to Linux developers.

This service is aimed exclusively at businesses and organizations, not home users. According to Microsoft, this extension is becoming more and more useful because developers are increasingly using Linux computers to access sensitive data, such as source code and login credentials.

The goal is for corporate security managers to be able to monitor and protect Linux computers in the same way they already do for Windows, macOS, and Linux servers. The desktop version uses the same tools and installation packages that were already available for servers.

What does protection include?

The service offers continuous protection against dangerous programs, the ability to detect and investigate suspicious activity, tools to check for potential security vulnerabilities, and centralized monitoring through Microsoft's online management environment.

The list of supported systems includes popular releases such as Ubuntu LTS, Debian, Fedora, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, openSUSE Leap, SUSE Linux Enterprise, Rocky Linux, and AlmaLinux. The graphical environment used by each computer does not affect compatibility, which depends on the basic features and kernel of the system.

The program tries to figure out whether a Linux installation is operating as a simple desktop computer or as a server based on the system's characteristics, and if it cannot identify it with certainty, it automatically classifies it as a server.

Organizations interested in using the service must have the appropriate Microsoft security subscription and meet the necessary system requirements.
