APT 3.3.4 is now available for Debian unstable, introducing SHA3-256 and SHA3-512 fingerprint support alongside stricter download verification rules that reject uncalculatable hashes.
The update also resolves OpenSSL error reporting, fixes source catalog fingerprint accuracy when MD5 is disabled, and generates Bash completion directly from the command parser.
New security options and stricter controls
The new version brings improvements to download control. Specifically, it adds support for new verification algorithms, such as SHA3-256 and SHA3-512, although these remain disabled by default.
At the same time, the program is becoming more strict. Now, if a necessary fingerprint cannot be calculated, the download is automatically rejected. Also, incorrect fingerprints in directories when the older MD5 method is disabled have been fixed, while errors during calculation are now displayed normally.
Other changes and availability
Other changes include better organization of help, command auto-completion now generated directly from the analysis system, as well as updated manual translations in Portuguese and Irish along with a new security guidelines file.
