Airbnb updates its policy to restrict mandatory checkout chores for guests, prohibiting requirements like stripping beds and washing dishes for bookings made on or after November 20.
Under the new policy, hosts are no longer allowed to require travelers to remove sheets from beds, wash and put away dishes, do laundry, or take out the trash. This change applies to reservations made after November 20.
Travelers' reaction and protests
The decision comes after years of complaints about departure cleaning requirements. Many guests complained that, despite paying regular cleaning fees, they were forced to do the work themselves, often facing hefty fines if they didn't comply.
The position of the owners
On the other hand, some owners have reported in online forums that basic cleaning tasks are necessary to properly maintain the premises and control preparation costs.
Exceptions to the new rules
The company has made specific exceptions for special cases. Owners can ask guests to conserve water during times of water scarcity or use special buckets that protect against animals in wildlife areas.
The effort for greater transparency in prices
The move continues the company's efforts around fees. It is noted that in 2023 Airbnb reported that more than 260.000 hosts had reduced or eliminated cleaning fees, while since May 2025 it began displaying total prices with fees worldwide from the beginning.
