Omen AI acquires Aquatic Labs for $16 million

Omen AI and Aquatic Labs are working to combine two approaches to cooling-water monitoring in data centers: Omen's sensors look for elements in the water, while Aquatic Labs' sensor tests alkalinity.

The combined team aims to bring one sensor to market by early next year.

The work concerns a substantial operational resource: the Water Foundation says US data centers use 17–19 billion gallons of water annually to cool chips, and expects use to triple in five years.

The acquisition and the technologies of the two companies

Omen AI was founded in 2024 with the goal of creating sensors that monitor cooling water in data centers in real time. Last June, the company raised $31 million in funding and is now moving forward with the acquisition of competitor Aquatic Labs for $16 million in cash and stock.

The two companies took different approaches. Omen's sensors checked for various elements in the water, while Aquatic Labs focused on measuring its alkalinity. Omen founder Zach Laberge met Aquatic Labs CEO Allan Adams through an investor.

Adams, a physicist, former professor at MIT and researcher at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will serve as chief scientific officer of the combined company. The teams are already working to combine the two technologies into a single sensor, which is expected to be available early next year.

What does water monitoring mean in practice?

Cooling water management is critical to the operation of computing systems. With the new sensors, administrators can use the liquid for longer and reduce cleaning costs, while avoiding costly downtime.
