Rivian prioritizes self-driving software, even as profitability lags

Rivian is prioritizing autonomous vehicle software development over immediate profitability, focusing on advanced driver assistance, point-to-point navigation software, and scalable vehicle platforms like the upcoming R2 SUV and future robotaxi deployments.

According to Scaringe, this technology will pave the way for new shapes and experiences in personal cars. A decade ago, companies promised major changes in vehicle design thanks to electrification and autonomous driving. But most of the ideas remained in drawings and prototypes.

Autonomous driving becomes a reality

Today, autonomous taxis are already operating in many cities around the world. At the same time, the software and components of electric cars have evolved and become cheaper.

Rivian is ramping up production of its R2 SUV, aiming to reverse the losses of previous years. The company already offers a system that allows the driver to drive without holding the steering wheel, but must remain alert and supervise the car. By the end of the year, it plans to release navigation software that will guide the car from the starting point to the destination. In that case, the driver will still have to supervise it.

Rivian's autonomous taxis

The company plans to make fully autonomous versions of the R2 available as taxis, through the Uber app.

Scaringe estimates that even when autonomous driving reaches level 4, 80% to 90% or more of the miles driven will still be in personal cars.

The vehicle that will follow the R3 will be called the R4. Rivian has not yet revealed its design.
