Sierra Space’s Ghost vehicle has completed two successful test drops, its first tests in two years.
The drops used balloon releases from 35,000 and 68,500 feet, with payloads including a whiskey bottle and a radio transmitter.
The program’s stated goal is delivery of any cargo anywhere on Earth within 90 minutes; the tests do not establish that capability.
How were the tests conducted?
During the test launches, the vehicle was transported to high altitudes using balloons, from which it was released. The specific altitudes at which the tests were carried out were 35.000 and 68.500 feet.
Inside the "Ghost" vehicle, there were a bottle of whiskey and a radio transmitter during the tests, in order to check their safe transportation.
The importance of the project
These tests were conducted as part of the Apollo Nexus training exercise, which is organized by the United States Space Administration. The goal of this specific project is to develop the ability to deliver cargo to any point on Earth in a very short period of time.
