Spotify is refining Family Plan verification with a QR-based address check: the plan manager displays a code on their phone, and a member scans it with theirs.
After a notice, members have seven days to complete verification; otherwise, they must switch to an individual plan and cannot join another Family or Duo plan for 12 months.
According to Spotify's support guidelines, the administrator displays a QR code on their phone and the member scans it with their phone. The member has seven days from the time they receive a notification to complete the review.
If they don't complete it within that time, they won't be able to join another Family or Duo Plan for 12 months. They'll have to switch to an individual plan and pay for it alone. This could affect, for example, adult children or friends who share a subscription but live at different addresses.
The confirmation comes after reports that Spotify was starting to implement QR code verification. Norström said the company is improving the checks over time as users find ways to bypass them. He added that the effort is ongoing and has no specific end date.

The Family Plan has been around for about 12 or 13 years and is a significant part of Spotify's subscriptions, Norström said. The improved controls are aimed at limiting sharing of the plan by people who don't live together and increasing subscriptions to the paid Premium plans.
