Spotify is implementing dynamic address verification for Premium Family plans using QR codes that refresh every few seconds to block screenshot workarounds.
Members have a seven-day window to confirm residency or risk a one-year lockout from family subscriptions.
The company said it may ask users to scan a code to verify that they live in the same household as the account manager. Once Spotify sends a notification, the user has seven days to complete the process. Otherwise, they may lose access and be unable to join another family or two-person plan for an entire year. Alternatively, users can sign up for an individual plan that costs $13 per month, compared to the $22 family plan for up to six accounts.
To prevent users who don't live together from using simple screenshots, Spotify refreshes the QR codes every few seconds. Meanwhile, users on Reddit have reported being able to scan the codes remotely using video calls on other devices.
The company's co-CEO, Alex Norstrom, said on a conference call for financial results that the verification is a formal improvement and not a new strict containment effort.
