Stalwart email management program released in its first stable version 1.0

Stalwart reaches v1.0, its first stable release in five years.

Built in Rust, the mail and collaboration server features SIMD/SWAR parser rewrites, a custom base64 library, and an overhauled search engine.

The program supports the basic protocols for sending, receiving, and storing email, as well as features for calendars, contacts, and file sharing.

Speed and performance improvements

The new version brings significant changes for greater speed. The developers rewrote key parts of the code, while a new library for data processing was created from scratch. At the same time, database management was improved with more efficient transactions, fewer storage operations, and special compression for email. There were also adjustments for several popular data storage systems, while the redesigned in-memory storage method reduces the need to access the database for daily operations.

The text search engine has been completely redesigned to support advanced searches, predicate matching, and compressed indexes. According to the developers' tests, searching 250.000 messages takes less than four milliseconds.

In tests conducted on remote computers, Stalwart outperformed other well-known solutions in 35 out of 38 comparisons. For example, it was able to handle 5.445 incoming messages per second, compared to 723 messages for other systems.

New features and upgrades

Version 1.0 introduces content indexing for PDFs, document files, spreadsheets, presentations, and other file formats. Other additions include support for metadata, new digital signature formats that are resistant to future threats, and expanded connectivity capabilities.

The database structure has now been finalized, which promises easier upgrades in future releases. However, migrating existing installations to version 1.0 requires a separate migration process, as databases from older versions cannot be opened directly. A special tool allows for gradual data migration for installations running version 0.16.27, while the old server continues to operate.
