Starlink has imposed a restriction affecting vehicles and drones travelling above 100 mph, in a case involving Starshield, its government and military service.
Ukraine says it received no warning and that military missions failed.
Elon Musk says the US government controls Starshield and its use decisions—a concrete example of how service limits and decision-making authority intersect.
The impact on military operations
Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to the Ukrainian President, confirmed that the restriction came into effect without prior notice. According to the Ukrainian side, this sudden change caused the failure of critical military missions. The country's former Defense Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, has already called for the complete lifting of the restriction, highlighting the country's needs for its defense.
The stance of Elon Musk and the US government
Elon Musk responded to the criticism by stating that the Starshield system is controlled by the US government. According to the entrepreneur, decisions on the speed and manner of using the system are made by the US military and leadership. Musk has expressed the opinion that using Starlink for offensive military actions is not appropriate for a commercial service.
What about the other connections?
Despite the reported problems with mobile devices, fixed Starlink connections in Ukraine remain fully operational. It is noted that for simple, fixed connections, there was already a speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour, which had been in effect since 2025.
