Satellite internet provider Viasat has reported an 83% decline in its US fixed broadband subscriber base since late 2020, falling from 603,000 to approximately 100,000 subscribers.

This shift in the satellite connectivity market follows the entry of new competitors, with Viasat currently rolling out new hardware and service plans to regain momentum.

This report highlights the broader shifts in residential satellite broadband infrastructure and market share.

According to the company’s third-quarter financial results, its subscriber base shrank to about 100.000 fixed satellite customers. For comparison, Viasat had 603.000 subscribers in the same quarter of 2020. The company’s chief financial officer attributed part of the recent decline to seasonal fluctuations and higher customer churn during the summer.

New satellites and programs

To attract audiences again, Viasat launched a new satellite, which is located above the American continent and is designed to offer download speeds exceeding 100 Mbps.

In this context, the company launched the new Viasat Unleashed Max home plan, which provides unlimited data, basic speeds of 80 Mbps and the ability to accelerate up to 200 Mbps. The plan costs $ 109,99 per month for the first year and then the price increases to $ 179,99. In addition, the more economical Essentials and Unleashed plans are available, with prices starting at $ 39,99 and $ 69,99 per month respectively for the first year. However, upgrading to this new service requires new equipment and professional installation at the customer's premises.

Competition from Starlink

On the other hand, Starlink continues to dominate the market. According to Deutsche Bank estimates, the competing service has about 4,1 million subscribers in the country, while in select areas it offers deep discounts of up to 30% to 50% on its home plans.
