Search Now Has to Work Before the Click

Traditional SEO was built around a visible path.

A page ranked, the user clicked, the website recorded the visit, and analytics helped explain what happened next. That model still matters, but answer engines have added a quieter layer before the click.

A buyer can now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, or Google AI Overviews a direct question and get a useful answer without visiting a website. The brand may be mentioned, cited, compared, or skipped entirely before any session appears in analytics.

That is why search stopping being only about the click changes how technical and content teams need to think about visibility.

The page still needs to be crawlable and indexable.

But it also needs to be extractable. Clear sections, direct answers, structured data, original proof, and consistent entity signals help answer engines understand when the brand belongs in a response.

A ranking can show where a URL appears.

It cannot always show whether the brand is being named when a buyer asks a decision-stage question. It also cannot show whether an answer engine used the page as a source but recommended someone else.

AEO adds that missing layer.

It tracks mentions, citations, answer presence, accuracy, and how competitors appear across the same prompt set.

The click has not disappeared.

But the first moment of trust may now happen earlier, inside the answer itself.
