DNS Resolution with the help of DNS Hierarchy
- DIAGRAM
- First of all when you search a Domain on Browser then it will not fetch the website directly it provide the task to DNS Recursive resolver.
- DNS recursive resolver recursively lookup for IP and then provide it to browser to load.
- DNS recursive resolver first ask the root server that tell that which (TLD) TOP LEVEL DOMAIN Server hold the information about the .com, .in,. online, etc.
- TLD server hold the information about the Authoritative Name Server of domain that hold the record of queried Domain. -for example - Cloudflare or any domain where we configured our domain records such as A, AAAA, CNAME, etc. and sometimes the domain registrar provide the Name Server such as Hostinger.
- Authoritative (NS) Name Servers - ** This is actually where our Domain records configured , it provide direct A , AAAA record or CNAME. -IP returned - ** Now if Authoritative NS hold direct A or AAAA record then it simply tell the IP to connect with server and if there is a CNAME then it lookup for the CNAME Authoritative Server and then its records.
Why its called Recursive?
- Because the process is like jumping from one DNS to another to lookup recursively for the Domain IP to communicate with the server.
