My Journey at Hacktoberfest 2026: Exploring Open Source & Community in Oluvil

Stepping into the World of Open Source

Attending the official Hacktoberfest Meetup Oluvil hosted at South Eastern University of Sri Lanka (SEUSL) was an incredible milestone in my tech journey!

Connecting with over 100+ fellow students and tech enthusiasts on campus highlighted the true power of collaborative software development and open-source culture.

Key Learnings from the Meetup

  • Demystifying Git & GitHub: Understanding how pull requests, branching, and version control drive global software collaboration.
  • Open Source for Beginners: Learning how small contributions—from fixing typos in documentation to building real-world features—create massive impact.
  • Community Spirit: Engaging with peers, sharing development workflows, and solving problems together.

Celebrating the Fest Attendee Milestone

I am excited to earn the official Hacktoberfest 2026 Fest Attendee badge on DEV!

As an ICT undergraduate, this meetup has sparked my curiosity to dive deeper into full-stack development, agentic AI, and contributing regularly to open-source repositories.

A huge thank you to SEUSL and the organizing team for bringing this global tech experience to our faculty.
