Some of these events also have social and mixer options that are well-lit and don't revolve around alcohol consumption.
I wish so much that this were more common.
I much prefer some kind of facilitated brief conversations with a rotating small group of people (whom I can later talk to at greater length based on interest) than boozing up at a huge bar table where I'm stuck with only the people sitting right next to and in front of me.
I once saw @bcrypt tweet about a "tea & biscuits" party that she was hosting I think for defcon and it just sounded lovingly refreshing and inclusive. We need a teaconf movement :)
