Distribution Transformer Monitoring Solution

Distribution industries have robust competition among them to give reliable power at a low cost. According to reports, maintenance and replacement of transformers are a little bit expensive process for the industries.

Keeping this factor on the prime concern, IoT based distribution transformer monitoring system is evolved in this work to analyze health conditions of distribution transformers at regular intervals.
Health parameters are determined on the basis of change in voltage, temperature variations and load capability, which are estimated with the help of sensors. This low-cost monitoring system can be easily installed in a transformer at any location to monitor remotely, which not only estimates health conditions but also is helpful in recognizing its life span as well.

Transformers are utilized for electricity distribution and transmission which minimizes the primary voltage to the usage of voltage for customer use. There are two different units which are remote terminal unit (RTU) and monitoring unit. With the DTMS unit, it is easy to examine various parameters such as current, temperature, rise and fall in oil level, vibration and humidity.

All such monitoring parameters are handled and if any irregularity occurs, the system sends Alert messages to the mobile phones and noted in system memory via (ADC) analog to digital converter.

If any emergency condition happens immediately message send to the respective team through GSM and similarly on we can also get alert about it through GPRS. The concerned engineer at the transformer site cannot continuously keep an eye on the transformer hence given offered system does communication with them in any emergency conditions of distribution transformer through GSM/ GPRS module.

The main goal of the distribution transformer which supports to minimize the primary voltage of the electric distribution system depends on utilization voltage serving the customer. A distribution transformer basically is a static device which is assembled using two or more twists that assist to transfer alternating current electric power by electromagnetic induction from one circuit to other at the same frequency but with various values of voltage and current.

Many utility industries around the world are executing, or have plans to apply a smart metering solution. Automation of distribution substations increases the visibility of the low voltage (LV) network and assists a utility company to use the power network in an optimum way. The first step towards this is monitoring distribution transformers and due to the significance of this asset, monitoring of various critical parameters is important.

Transformer monitoring can propose a lot of advantages for utility companies, including the ability to:

• Identify when transformers are on the edge of collapse and take curative performance-related preventive actions. Frequently a utility may lose a transformer due to a lack of data around how the transformer is running.

• Increase the visibility of the low voltage power network and support utility companies to deliver high-quality electricity to customers. As this system gives real-time information about voltage, power factor, harmonics and unbalances from the LV network, based on this data, utility companies can utilize particular alternatives to resolve problems as they occur.

• Reduce outage duration. If one transformer falls down, it is generally replaced within a period of 12-24 hours.

• It uses the required information from the transformer monitoring system and makes decisions about distribution network planning. For instance, this system is capable to recognize if transformers are working with more than 75-80% of their ability, supplying the utility company with a direct perspective of which parts of the power network require an extension.

• Access required transformer monitoring information for asset management and preventive maintenance.

• Utilize sharply measured delivered energy; and if all customers fed by this transformer are provided with smart meters, the system can estimate LV network losses.
