AI: Brilliant…Until It’s Not

Artificial Intelligence: the wonder of our age, capable of analyzing mountains of data, generating believable text, and impressing us with feats that seem almost human. But let me tell you, AI is also the world’s smartest idiot.

I recently decided to test its genius with a simple, fun little experiment. The goal? Recreate Pac-Man. Nothing fancy—just a yellow circle moving around on a screen. Easy enough, right? Wrong. What I got was a masterclass in chaos, courtesy of my AI assistant.

The Great Pac-Man Experiment

Picture this: I ask AI to help me with a straightforward task. “Let’s make Pac-Man,” I say. “It’ll be fun,” I think. And to its credit, the AI starts strong. Pac-Man moves! Success! But wait…why is he a square? Why is he on the wrong side of the screen? Why is he…gone?

Every correction I gave was met with a bizarre new twist. It was like watching someone try to build a sandcastle with a rake. Pac-Man bounced between looking like a blob, disappearing entirely, and, at one point, taking on what I can only describe as “abstract art” vibes.

A Lesson in Patience

Now, I’m a patient person—relatively speaking—but there’s only so much you can take when the AI keeps trying and failing to reinvent the wheel. It’s almost endearing, really. Like a puppy determined to catch its tail, the AI just couldn’t get out of its own way.

And that’s the crux of it: AI is brilliant…until you ask it to do something small, logical, and human. It can write essays, predict trends, and even beat us at chess, but give it a simple, creative problem, and it’s like watching a genius get lost in a grocery store.

So, What’s the Deal?

The problem isn’t that AI isn’t smart. It’s that it’s missing something crucial: understanding. It’s not really “thinking.” It’s just throwing patterns and probabilities at the wall to see what sticks. And when it misses? It’s a glorious disaster.

The Bottom Line

AI isn’t here to replace us—yet. It’s more like that coworker who’s brilliant in meetings but utterly useless when it’s time to refill the printer paper. So, next time you’re tempted to hand off a “simple” task to AI, remember: it might surprise you. Just don’t expect Pac-Man to show up looking like Pac-Man.

And if anyone asks why he’s still a square? Tell them it’s postmodern.
