Building a Portfolio Fast with AI (and What I Learned Along the Way)

New Year, New You Portfolio Challenge Submission

This is a submission for the New Year, New You Portfolio Challenge Presented by Google AI

About Me

I work in IT and Computer Science education, and I spend a lot of time juggling infrastructure, teaching, and hands-on technical work. For a while, I didn’t have a personal portfolio that truly reflected what I was learning and experimenting with—especially in cloud and AI.

This project is my “reset” for the new year. Instead of overengineering a portfolio from scratch, I wanted to explore how modern AI and cloud tools could help me ship faster, learn more effectively, and focus on improving my skills rather than getting stuck in setup and boilerplate.

My goals for this portfolio are simple:

  • Learn more about AI-assisted development
  • Get hands-on experience with Google Cloud
  • Improve my JavaScript skills
  • Use the portfolio to find online projects and part-time opportunities where I can grow further

Portfolio

My portfolio is deployed on Google Cloud Run and serves as a lightweight, always-available showcase of my work and background.

How I Built It

Instead of spending days setting up a framework, I used Antigravity to generate a working portfolio in minutes. From there, I focused on:

  • Understanding what the generated code was doing
  • Making incremental improvements
  • Deploying early to Cloud Run to experience a real production workflow

Using AI didn’t replace learning—it accelerated it. I treated Gemini like a senior developer I could ask questions to, review ideas with, and use for feedback.

What I'm Most Proud Of

  • Shipping something real instead of endlessly tweaking
  • Successfully deploying and maintaining the portfolio on Cloud Run
  • Using AI tools as collaborators, not crutches
  • Turning this challenge into a learning experience rather than just a submission

Most importantly, this portfolio represents momentum. It’s not “finished,” but it’s live, improving, and already helping me move toward new opportunities.
