How Being a Developer Made Me a Better QA Engineer (and Vice Versa)

For years, dev and QA were treated like oil and water: developers build, QA breaks. Having written production code in PHP and React before moving into Software Testing, I’ve realized bridging this gap is a superpower.

Here is what working on both sides taught me:

  1. Developer Intuition = Better Edge-Case Testing Understanding backend queries and frontend state (like async handling in React or custom CRM logic in PHP) lets you test how code is written, not just what the UI shows. You anticipate where race conditions and invalid payloads happen before opening Postman.
  2. Clearer Bug Reports Instead of filing vague tickets like "The form broke," knowing the dev stack means isolating the root cause first. Attaching specific API response codes, payload logs, and DevTools errors eliminates back-and-forth debugging.
  3. Defensive Coding When writing code with a QA mindset, defensive programming becomes second nature. You catch null checks, edge cases, and API failure states during development rather than in staging.
