Supplement facts panels sometimes hide key dosages behind the phrase "proprietary blend" followed by a total weight. The label lists several ingredients but only one number for the whole blend — which means you cannot tell whether the ingredient you want is present in a meaningful amount or merely sprinkled in for the name on the label.
There is a legitimate argument for blends: formulations are real intellectual property, and exact ratios can be copied by competitors. But transparency and proprietary protection are not mutually exclusive. Many responsible brands publish the exact per-ingredient amounts while protecting their sourcing and processing methods, which is where the real craft often lives.
What should you do when you meet a proprietary blend? First, check the total blend weight against typical effective doses. If a blend totals 500 mg and contains five ingredients, each one could be present at just 100 mg or less — often below the doses used in published research. Second, look for a "supplement facts" panel that lists any ingredient OUTSIDE the blend; those are the only amounts you can verify.
